The artist I am writing about is Tim Knowles. I love that we are not only learning new concepts in class, but we are also being introduced to a ton of both past artists and contemporary artists. Today we were introduced to artist Tim Knowles. Tim Knowles creates drawing machines and lets nature do what it will to his art. For examples, the picture on the left is of an easel right in front of a tree. The tree has drawing implements attached to its branches. The wind blows, causing the branches to move, thus drawing on the paper. This is such a beautiful concept. The combination of art and motion is really fascinating to me.
Professor Maguire brought up a lesson idea which I think could be easily adaptable to students at the elementary level. She talked about having students wear boxes all day with some form of drawing apparatus inside and by the end of the day students are allowed to take out their "art" which would be completely individual to them. No 2 pieces would look alike as it is impossible for 2 people to do exactly the same movements throughout the day. |

This is from his vehicle motion drawings.
A drawing apparatus is affixed to the back of the car. As the car moves, the pen draws. The art is dependent

Ink on paper and C-Type prints 8000 x 2200 x 300mm 2012 Drawing materials are attached to the ends of the spruce tree branches. When the wind blows, the branches move on the paper, thus creating a design. I really feel inspired by Tim Knowles work. My own work is similar in that I look to nature for inspiration. I love finding similarities in my work with his even though there are such apparent differences. |
